About us
ELIM Porth Christian Centre is an Elim Pentecostal Church. If you have never encountered the word Elim before it refers to a place in the Bible called just that, Elim. Elim was one of the places that the Israelites came to on there journey from Egypt into the Promised Land. The Oasis at Elim consisted of 12 wells and 70 palm trees and thus the parched people found refreshment in a hostile desert.
Two brothers, from Maesteg in South Wales, Principal George Jeffrey's and his brother Stephen who was an evangelist first founded the Elim Pentecostal Churches in the 1915. The first Elim church was planted in Southern Ireland! Nowadays Elim has churches in various parts of the world and boasts Britain's biggest church in Kensington Temple, London. The Porth church, planted in 1950, was one of a number of churches that was opened by the late Rev. P. S. Brewster of Cardiff City Temple. WELSH CHRISTIAN HERITAGE The Rhondda Valley was one of the places greatly influenced by the great Welsh revival in 1904. The evangelist Evan Roberts preached in and around the Rhondda in a period where over 180,000 people were converted to Christ. Wales has a tremendous history of evangelical Christianity and has experienced - at a national level - several, well documented, awakenings or revivals. We believe that the nation is both in need of and ready for a present day revival where Biblical principles will once again be engraved into our communities. Man literally stands on the precipice of the unknown, we are facing a type of war hithertoo unknown - where will it lead? In addition, so called genetic engineering leaves us on the brink of being able to clone the first human being. After this, what? Will it eventually mean the era of designer babies? In addition, the break-up of family life and with it family values will have repercussions down the line where more and more adults will have a great struggle with their identity. What of the modern day trend toward drug addiction? At Porth Christian Centre we have first hand, on going, experience of how the drug problem is decimating lives. We also have the privilege of seeing people set free from class A drug addiction! We believe that scientific advancement will be counterproductive unless it is managed by a higher authority than man. We also believe that no amount of social improvement will help our society unless it is accompanied by a moral turning. We therefore, have no hesitation in calling people back to God. Come to Elim! |
